About Word Scramble
Word Scramble gives you a short run of jumbled words each day, from four letters up to eight. Every jumble is an everyday word with its letters mixed up, and each one has exactly one answer, so when the letters click into place you know you have it. Spell the word with the tiles or the keyboard; the next jumble appears as soon as you are right. The clock runs for the whole set, and a wrong word or a hint adds a mistake, which only breaks ties on the leaderboard. A quick warm-up for anyone who likes anagrams.
How to play Word Scramble
- Each jumble is the letters of one everyday word in a mixed-up order. Tap the tiles (or type) to spell the word, then press Check word.
- Tap a placed letter, or press Delete or Backspace, to take it back. Shuffle mixes the letters left in the tray, which often makes the word jump out.
- A wrong word counts as a mistake, and so does a hint, which shows the next letter of the word. Every jumble has exactly one answer.
- Easy days have four words of 4 to 6 letters, medium days five words of 4 to 7 and hard days six words of 5 to 8. Fastest time wins; fewer mistakes break ties.
Tips & strategy
- Look for common endings first: -ING, -ED, -ER, -LY and -TION use up several letters at once and leave a short start to find.
- Try likely pairs at the front, such as TH, SH, CH, ST and BR.
- Shuffle the tray when you are stuck: a new order often shows the word at once.
- A hint costs one mistake but gives the first letter. Mistakes only break ties, so on a long word it often pays.
Word Scramble: questions and answers
Can a jumble have two answers?
No. No other word in our dictionary uses exactly the same letters, so each jumble has one answer.
How is Word Scramble ranked?
By time for the whole set of words, fastest first; fewer mistakes (wrong words and hints) break ties. Only a member’s first game of the day counts.
Can I skip a word?
No, each word must be solved before the next appears. A hint shows the next letter if you are stuck.
Do the words repeat?
Not for more than six months after a daily puzzle uses them.
