About Crazy Eights

Crazy Eights is a quick shedding game: the first player to get rid of every card wins the hand. Each turn you play a card that matches the top card of the discard pile by suit or by rank, and eights are wild, so you can play one at any time and choose the suit the next player must follow. If you cannot play, you draw. Play against one, two or three robots, for a single hand or a race to 100 points.

  2. An eight can be played on anything: then choose the suit the next player must follow.
  3. If you cannot play, draw from the stock until you can (or draw one and pass, in the settings).

Tips & strategy

  • Keep your eights for when nothing else fits; they are your escape from a long draw.
  • Play from your longest suit, so you can keep matching it.
  • Dump high cards early: eights, kings, queens and jacks cost a lot if another player goes out first.
  • When an opponent is down to one or two cards, change the suit to one they could not play last time.

Crazy Eights: questions and answers

How are points scored?

The player who goes out scores the cards left in the other hands: 50 for each eight, 10 for kings, queens and jacks, 1 for aces and the number for the rest.

What happens if I cannot play?

You draw from the stock until you can play, or, with the draw-one option, draw one card and pass if it does not fit. If the stock is empty you pass.

What if nobody can play?

When the stock is empty and every player has passed, the hand ends and the player with the lowest count scores the difference to each other hand.

How many cards does each player get?

Seven each with two players and five each with three or four. The next card from the stock starts the discard pile.
