About Free Cells

Free Cells is the solitaire for planners. All 52 cards are dealt face up into eight columns, so nothing is hidden and almost every deal can be won with enough thought. Four free cells give you somewhere to park cards while you dig out the aces and twos. Every daily deal is solved by a computer before it is published.

  3. A run of cards can move at once when there is room to move it one card at a time through the free cells and empty columns.

Tips & strategy

  • Free the aces and twos first; low cards buried deep in a column hold everything up.
  • Keep free cells empty as long as you can. Each free cell doubles how many cards you can move together.
  • An empty column is worth even more than a free cell, so think twice before filling one.
  • Plan a few moves ahead before you start: with every card visible, the whole game can be worked out.

Free Cells: questions and answers

How many cards can I move at once?

As many as you could move one at a time through the empty free cells and columns: free cells plus one, doubled for each empty column you are not moving into.

Is every daily deal winnable?

Yes. Each deal is solved by a computer before it is used. Harder days are deals the solver needed longer to crack.

Can cards come back from the foundations?

No. Once a card is on its foundation it stays there, so make sure you no longer need it.

How is Free Cells ranked?

By the time taken to win, with fewer moves breaking ties.
