Sea Battle

How to play
  • Each player hides five ships on a 10 × 10 sea: five, four, three, three and two squares long, across or down, never overlapping.
  • Take turns calling one square of the other sea. A hit is marked red, a miss grey; when every square of a ship is hit it is sunk and shown.
  • The first player to sink all five enemy ships wins. Both players get the same number of shots, so a hit does not give an extra turn.
  • Place ships by tapping a ship and then a square, dragging a placed ship, or Auto-place; Rotate turns the chosen ship. Results are saved on this device.

About Sea Battle

Sea Battle is the game of hidden fleets: each player places five ships on a grid of ten by ten, then they take turns calling squares until one fleet is sunk. Online, the server keeps both seas secret, so nobody can see the other side. On one device, a curtain between turns hides each sea while the phone changes hands. The robot has three levels: Easy fires at random, Normal hunts and then finishes a ship it has hit, and Hard shoots where ships can still fit.

How to play Sea Battle

  1. Each player hides five ships on a 10 × 10 sea: five, four, three, three and two squares long, across or down, never overlapping.
  2. Take turns calling one square of the other sea. A hit is marked red, a miss grey; when every square of a ship is hit it is sunk and shown.
  3. The first player to sink all five enemy ships wins. Both players get the same number of shots, so a hit does not give an extra turn.
  4. Place ships by tapping a ship and then a square, dragging a placed ship, or Auto-place; Rotate turns the chosen ship. Results are saved on this device.

Tips & strategy

  • Spread the fleet out and keep ships away from each other: a hit on one should not lead straight to another.
  • Once you hit, try the four neighbours; once you have two hits in a line, keep going along it until the ship sinks.
  • Hunting in a chequerboard pattern finds every ship, because even the two-square boat covers one dark and one light square.
  • Late in the game, count the squares where the ships still afloat could fit, and shoot there.

Sea Battle: questions and answers

How do I place my ships?

Tap a ship in the list, then the square where it starts; Rotate turns it across or down. You can drag a placed ship to move it, tap it to turn it, or press Auto-place to arrange the whole fleet at random.

Does a hit give me another shot?

No. Players alternate one shot at a time, so both get the same number of shots and a game is never decided by one lucky run.

Which ships are there?

A carrier of five squares, a cruiser of four, a frigate and a submarine of three, and a patrol boat of two.

Can the other player see my sea online?

No. The server sends each page only its own fleet and the shots it has fired; a sunk ship is shown once it is sunk.
