About Klondike Solitaire

Klondike is the solitaire most people learned first. Seven columns hide most of their cards face down, and the stock in the corner holds the rest. Your job is to free the aces, build each suit up to the king, and uncover every hidden card along the way. Each day brings one new deal, the same for everyone, and it is always possible to win.

How to play Klondike Solitaire

  1. Build the four foundations up by suit, from ace to king.
  2. In the seven columns, build down in alternating colours (red on black, black on red). Only a king can go into an empty column.
  3. Tap a card and then the place it should go, or drag it there. Double-tap a card to send it to its foundation. Tap the stock to turn cards.
  4. Easy turns one card at a time, medium allows three passes through the stock, hard turns three at a time. Fastest win ranks first.

Tips & strategy

  • Turn over face-down cards whenever you can; a move that uncovers a card is usually better than one that does not.
  • Empty a column only when you have a king ready to put in it.
  • Do not rush cards to the foundations if you still need them to hold lower cards of the other colour.
  • Work on the longest columns first, because they hide the most cards.
  • On draw-three days, playing one card from the waste changes which cards come up on the next pass.

Klondike Solitaire: questions and answers

Can every daily deal be won?

Yes. Before a deal is published a computer solver plays it through, and only a deal it can win is used.

What is the difference between the difficulty levels?

Easy turns one card from the stock at a time with no limit on passes, medium allows three passes, and hard turns three cards at a time.

How do I move cards?

Tap a card and then the column or foundation where it should go, or drag it there. Double-tap a card to send it straight to its foundation.

How is Klondike ranked?

By the time taken to win, with fewer moves breaking ties. Only a member’s first game of the day counts.
