About Number Target

Number Target gives you six numbers and a three-digit target. Combine the numbers with addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to make the target exactly. It is good practice for mental arithmetic, and every daily puzzle is checked to have at least one solution.

How to play Number Target

  1. Pick a number, an operation (+ − × ÷), then another number. They combine into a new number.
  2. Each number can be used once. You do not have to use them all.
  3. Every result must be a whole number above zero: no fractions, no negatives.
  4. Reach the target exactly to win. Undo or reset at any time.

Tips & strategy

  • Get close first: multiply the bigger numbers to reach the right range, then adjust with the small ones.
  • Work backwards from the target. Ask which numbers divide it, or how far it is from a round number.
  • You do not have to use every number; the neatest solution sometimes leaves one or two out.
  • Undo is always there, so explore a path and step back if it goes nowhere.
  • If the target ends in 5 or 0, look for a way to multiply by 5 or 10 near the end.

Number Target: questions and answers

Do I have to use all six numbers?

No. Use as many as you need. Each number can be used once.

Are fractions or negative numbers allowed?

No. Every step must give a whole number above zero.

How is Number Target ranked?

By time. The fastest exact solve wins.

Is there only one way to reach the target?

Often there are several. Any correct way counts, however many steps it takes, and only your time is ranked.

What is a good way to start?

Look at how close the target is to a multiple of the biggest number, then build the multiplier and the small difference from the other numbers. Big numbers are almost always multiplied, not added.
