About Famous Books and Authors Quiz

The Famous Books and Authors Quiz is a daily trip along the bookshelf. Questions ask who wrote a famous novel, play or poem, which book a well-known character comes from, where stories are set, which writers used pen names and what literary words such as sonnet, haiku and epic mean. The books range from ancient epics and Shakespeare to the great novels of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, with a good share of Canadian writers. There are no spoilers: the questions never give away how a story ends. Each answer comes with a short explanation, often the year the book first came out.

Tips & strategy

  • Many famous writers used pen names: Mark Twain was Samuel Clemens and George Eliot was Mary Ann Evans.
  • If you know where a book is set, you are halfway to its author: settings often point to the writer’s own country.
  • Learn the big forms: a sonnet has 14 lines, a haiku three short lines, and an epic is a long poem about heroes.
