About Crowns

Crowns is a placement puzzle on a board split into regions. Put exactly one crown in every row, every column and every region, and never let two crowns touch, not even diagonally. Boards grow from 6×6 on easy days to 8×8 on hard days, and each has exactly one solution.

How to play Crowns

  1. Place exactly one crown in every row, every column and every region.
  2. Two crowns may never touch, not even at the corners.
  3. Tap a square once to mark it ×, again for a crown, and a third time to clear it.
  4. Every board has exactly one solution and can be solved by logic. Fastest time wins.

Tips & strategy

  • Start with the smallest region: it has the fewest places a crown can go.
  • When a region lies entirely within one row or column, no other region can use that line.
  • Every crown rules out the eight squares around it, so mark them with × straight away.
  • If two regions are confined to the same two rows, the other regions cannot use those rows.
  • Look for a row where every open square belongs to the same region; that region’s crown must be in that row.

Crowns: questions and answers

Can crowns touch at the corners?

No. Two crowns may never be next to each other in any direction, including diagonally.

How do I mark squares?

Tap once for ×, twice for a crown and a third time to clear the square.

Are the regions shown only by colour?

No. Each region also has its own pattern and a thick border, so the board can be read without colour.

How is Crowns ranked?

By time. The fastest correct solve wins.

Where should I start?

With the smallest regions: a region of one square must hold a crown. Then look for any region whose open squares all lie in one row or column; that line’s crown is in that region, so the rest of the line can be marked ×.
