The Middle Ages, roughly the thousand years from about 500 to 1500, were much more than knights and castles, and the Medieval History Quiz covers the whole world. Questions visit the Byzantine Empire and Viking voyages, feudal Europe, the Norman Conquest of 1066 and the Magna Carta, the scholars of the Islamic Golden Age, Tang and Song China, the Mongol Empire, the empire of Mali and Great Zimbabwe. You will also meet the Black Death, the Hundred Years’ War, Joan of Arc and the printing press. Legends such as King Arthur are labelled as legends, and every answer has a short explanation.

Tips & strategy

  • Anchor the period with a few dates: 476 (the end of the Western Roman Empire), 1066, 1215 and 1453.
  • Look beyond Europe: many questions are about China, the Islamic world, Africa and the Mongols, who shaped the age as much as any king.
  • Watch for legend versus history: Robin Hood and King Arthur are stories, while William the Conqueror and Mansa Musa were real.
