About Bird Quiz

The common loon has been on Canada’s one-dollar coin since 1987, which is why everyone calls it the loonie. The Bird Quiz celebrates birds like it, from backyard visitors such as chickadees, robins and blue jays to the great travellers of the world: the Arctic tern, the albatross and the peregrine falcon, the fastest animal of all when it dives. Questions cover how birds fly, feed, nest and migrate, which birds cannot fly, and record-holders whose records will not change. Numbers such as diving depths and speeds were checked against reliable sources, so you can trust every explanation.

Tips & strategy

  • Beaks tell you what a bird eats: hooked for meat, long and thin for nectar, broad and flat for filtering water.
  • Remember the flightless birds as a set: ostrich, emu, rhea, cassowary, kiwi and the penguins.
  • Many Canadian birds migrate south for winter, but some, like chickadees and ravens, stay all year: think about the season in the question.
