About Weather and Climate Quiz

In southern Alberta a chinook wind can raise the temperature by more than twenty degrees in a few hours, melting snow in the middle of winter. The Weather and Climate Quiz covers how weather works, from clouds, rain and snow to thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes, plus climate zones, the seasons and the instruments that measure it all, with lots of Canadian weather along the way. Records are stated as they stood at the time, such as Lytton’s record heat and Fiona’s storm damage, so the answers stay true even when new records come.

Tips & strategy

  • Cloud names describe their shape and height: cumulus are heaps, stratus are layers, cirrus are wisps and nimbus brings rain.
  • Warm air holds more moisture and rises: that one idea explains clouds, thunderstorms and sea breezes.
  • Instrument names usually end in “-meter”: a barometer measures pressure, an anemometer wind speed and a hygrometer humidity.
