About Reptiles and Amphibians Quiz

Reptiles have dry, scaly skin and lay eggs on land, while amphibians have moist skin and usually start life in water, as tadpoles. The Reptiles and Amphibians Quiz tests that difference and much more: snakes, lizards, turtles, crocodiles, frogs, toads and salamanders, how they warm themselves, how they hunt and how they survive the winter. Canadian species are well represented, from the Massasauga rattlesnake of Ontario to the garter snakes of the Narcisse dens in Manitoba. Size records and venom facts were checked carefully, and records likely to change are worded as such.

Tips & strategy

  • Scales mean reptile, smooth damp skin means amphibian: that one rule settles many questions.
  • Turtles and tortoises are both reptiles; tortoises live on land, while most turtles spend much of their lives in water.
  • Many Canadian frogs and turtles survive winter by slowing down almost completely, and some frogs even freeze solid and thaw in spring.
