About Antonyms Quiz

Hot and cold, early and late, import and export: the Antonyms Quiz shows a word and asks which of four options means the opposite. Read carefully, because some wrong answers share the same prefix: when the opposite is made with “un-”, “in-” or “dis-”, the other options are made the same way, so the prefix alone never gives the answer away. The easy questions are everyday opposites, and the hard ones reach words such as majority and minority. Every question was checked so that there is exactly one opposite among the four.

Tips & strategy

  • Say the word in a sentence, then say the opposite sentence: the antonym usually jumps out.
  • Prefixes like un-, in-, im- and dis- often make opposites, but not always, so check the meaning, not just the spelling.
  • Some words have opposites in pairs of prefixes, such as import and export, or include and exclude.

Antonyms Quiz: questions and answers

What is an antonym?

A word that means the opposite of another word, such as hot and cold or ancient and modern.

Why do some wrong answers look like opposites?

Because they share a prefix with the right answer, so you need to know the meaning, not just spot an “un-” or “dis-”.

How many questions does the Antonyms Quiz have?

156 checked questions: 87 easy, 55 medium and 14 hard. Each day takes ten, easiest first, and a question doesn’t come back until its level has been used up.
