About Synonyms Quiz
Happy and joyful, big and large, forbid and prohibit: the Synonyms Quiz shows one word and asks which of four options means the same. The easy questions use everyday words, and the hard ones reach the vocabulary of good books and exams. Every wrong option is the same part of speech as the right one and was checked not to be a synonym in any common sense, so the question always has one best answer. It is a quick way to grow your vocabulary, and a good warm-up for word games such as Four Groups and the crosswords.
How to play Synonyms Quiz
- Press Start for the first of ten questions. The clock starts with it and stops at your last answer.
- Each question shows a word: pick the answer that means the same.
- Tap an answer, or press 1 to 4 (or A to D) on a keyboard. Answers are final: you see the right one and a one-line explanation, then press Next.
- Most correct answers ranks first, then the fastest time. Only a member’s first finished quiz of the day counts for the leaderboard.
Tips & strategy
- Try each option in a sentence in place of the word: the synonym keeps the meaning of the sentence.
- Watch the part of speech: a word that describes a thing will not be replaced by an action word.
- Prefixes and roots help with harder words, such as “pro-” in prohibit or “bene-” in beneficial.
