About Roman Numerals Quiz

Seven letters do all the work in Roman numerals: I is 1, V is 5, X is 10, L is 50, C is 100, D is 500 and M is 1,000. The Roman Numerals Quiz asks you to read them, as on clock faces, cornerstones and film credits, and to write numbers in them, from small numbers up to MMMCMXCIX, which is 3,999. The easy questions use simple numbers, and the hard ones are years and long numbers with the subtraction rule, such as XL for 40 and CM for 900. The questions are made fresh every day, so there is always a new set to try.

Tips & strategy

  • A smaller letter before a bigger one is subtracted: IV is 4, IX is 9, XC is 90 and CM is 900.
  • Read long numerals in chunks of thousands, hundreds, tens and units: MCMXCIV is M, CM, XC and IV, or 1994.
  • No letter repeats more than three times in a row, so 40 is XL, never XXXX.
