About Vocabulary Quiz
A strong vocabulary makes reading easier and writing sharper, and the Vocabulary Quiz builds it ten words at a time. Each question shows a word, sometimes in a short sentence, and asks you to pick its meaning from four answers of the same kind, so grammar never gives the answer away. The first words are everyday ones, the middle ones are the kind you meet in newspapers and books, and the last few are advanced words that are still worth knowing. Every answer comes with a short, plain definition, and every word is real, current English rather than a curiosity from an old dictionary.
How to play Vocabulary Quiz
- Press Start for the first of ten questions. The clock starts with it and stops at your last answer.
- Each question shows a word, sometimes in a short sentence: pick the answer that gives its meaning.
- Tap an answer, or press 1 to 4 (or A to D) on a keyboard. Answers are final: you see the right one and a one-line explanation, then press Next.
- Most correct answers ranks first, then the fastest time. Only a member’s first finished quiz of the day counts for the leaderboard.
Tips & strategy
- Look for a root you know: words that share a root often share part of their meaning.
- Before you look at the answers, say what you think the word means, then pick the closest match.
- If a word is new to you, try each answer in the sentence and keep the one that makes sense.

Where do the meanings come from?
Every meaning is checked against standard dictionaries, and the quiz uses Canadian spelling.
Is this the same as the Synonyms Quiz?
No. The Synonyms Quiz asks for a word with the same meaning; this quiz asks what a word means, and the two use different words.
How many questions does the Vocabulary Quiz have?
168 checked questions: 50 easy, 68 medium and 50 hard. Each day takes ten, easiest first, and a question doesn’t come back until its level has been used up.
