About Spelling Quiz
Is it accommodate or acommodate, definitely or definately, colleague or collegue? The Spelling Quiz gives you a short meaning and four spellings, and you pick the one that is right. It uses Canadian spelling, such as colour, centre, cheque and travelled, and leaves out words that have two accepted spellings in Canada, so there is always one clear answer. Every wrong option was checked to make sure it is not a real word or an accepted variant. The easy questions are common words; the hard ones are the words that trip up even careful writers.
How to play Spelling Quiz
- Press Start for the first of ten questions. The clock starts with it and stops at your last answer.
- Each question gives a short meaning and four spellings: pick the one that is right.
- Tap an answer, or press 1 to 4 (or A to D) on a keyboard. Answers are final: you see the right one and a one-line explanation, then press Next.
- Most correct answers ranks first, then the fastest time. Only a member’s first finished quiz of the day counts for the leaderboard.
Tips & strategy
- Many mistakes come from doubled letters: say the word slowly and listen for each syllable, as in ac-com-mo-date.
- Silent letters hide in many hard words, such as the c in muscle and the b in doubt: picture the word written down.
- Canadian spelling keeps the “our” in colour and favour and the “re” in centre and theatre, but uses “ize” in words like recognize.
