About Fractions Quiz
Fractions turn up everywhere, from recipes and measuring tapes to sale prices, and the Fractions Quiz keeps them fresh with ten questions a day. The first four are warm-ups: simplifying a fraction, finding a fraction of a number, spotting an equal fraction and picking the largest of four. The middle three add and subtract fractions with the same denominator and turn fractions into decimals, percentages and improper fractions, and the last three add and subtract fractions with different denominators, multiply and divide them, and write improper fractions as mixed numbers. The computer makes and checks every question, and many wrong answers are common slips, such as adding the tops and the bottoms.
How to play Fractions Quiz
- Press Start for the first of ten questions. The clock starts with it and stops at your last answer.
- Each question is a fraction to simplify, compare, add, subtract, multiply or divide, or to turn into a decimal, a percentage or a mixed number.
- Tap an answer, or press 1 to 4 (or A to D) on a keyboard. Answers are final: you see the right one and a one-line explanation, then press Next.
- Most correct answers ranks first, then the fastest time. Only a member’s first finished quiz of the day counts for the leaderboard.
Tips & strategy
- To simplify, divide the top and the bottom by the largest number that goes into both.
- To add or subtract, rewrite both fractions over the same denominator first, and never add the bottoms.
- Dividing by a fraction is the same as multiplying by it turned upside down: 1/2 ÷ 1/4 is 1/2 × 4, which is 2.
Fractions Quiz: questions and answers
Are the answers always in lowest terms?
Yes, apart from the question that asks which fraction equals another one. An answer such as 2/4 appears as 1/2.
Can I use a calculator?
You can, but the quiz is ranked on time as well as correct answers, and most questions are quicker in your head with the tips above.
Are the Fractions Quiz questions ever the same?
The questions are made by the computer for each day, from simple warm-ups to hard ones, so there is a new set every day. Everyone gets the same ten on the same day.
