About Continents and Countries Quiz

Picture a world map and see how much of it you can fill in. The Continents and Countries Quiz asks two kinds of questions: which continent a country is on, and which countries share a land border. The first is easy for big, famous countries and harder for small ones, while the second really tests your sense of the map. Neighbours are worked out from Natural Earth’s border data and checked by hand, and pairs separated only by sea are never counted. Countries that span two continents, such as Russia, Egypt and Kazakhstan, come with a short explanation of how they are grouped.

Tips & strategy

  • For neighbour questions, picture the country and walk around its border in your head, clockwise from the north.
  • Small countries are often surrounded on all sides: Lesotho by South Africa, San Marino and Vatican City by Italy.
  • Remember that island countries have no land neighbours unless they share an island, like Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

Continents and Countries Quiz: questions and answers

How are continents counted?

As seven: Africa, Antarctica, Asia, Europe, North America, Oceania and South America, with Central America and the Caribbean as part of North America.

Do sea borders count as neighbours?

No. Only countries that share a land border count, so two countries facing each other across a strait are not neighbours here.
