About US States and Capitals Quiz

In more than half of the US states the biggest city is not the capital: New York City is not the capital of New York, and Los Angeles is not the capital of California. The US States and Capitals Quiz is full of questions like that. It covers all 50 states, asking for capitals, the state a city is in, two-letter postal codes, nicknames and which states border Canada. The easy questions start with size and famous cities, and the hard end of the quiz is made of capitals like Pierre, Montpelier and Olympia. Wrong options are never the capital of another state, so the question stays fair.

Tips & strategy

  • Postal codes trip people up in sets: MI, MN, MS and MO, or AL, AK, AZ and AR. Learn the M and A states together.
  • Many capitals are smaller, central towns chosen long ago, so the famous city is often the wrong answer.
  • Thirteen states share a border with Canada, from Alaska and Washington to Maine: picture the map along the 49th parallel.
